The youngest sailor in Tokyo 2020 dies while training with her twin sister

The Olympic sailing world has woken up to the tragic news of the death of Eya Guezgueza 17-year-old Tunisian sailor who died on Sunday while training at sea.

Guezguez, who competed in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, she was sailing with her twin sister Sarra when their boat capsized due to strong winds. Eya died after the accident while her sister, who competed alongside her in Tokyo in the 49er class, managed to survive.

“I am shocked by the news of the death of sailor Eya Guezguez. She was an inspiring talent and role model for her generation of athletes.” Thomas Bachpresident of the International Olympic Committee, in the statement where the Olympic movement lamented the death of Guezguez.

“Eya Guezguez’s participation in Tokyo 2020 alongside her twin sister Sarra will continue to motivate girls around the world. Our thoughts are with her family, her friends and the Tunisian Olympic community.”

The two sisters were scheduled to attend the 2024 Paris Games after finishing 21st in their Olympic debut. Both were the youngest depregatistas to compete in Tokyo.
