Tour of Sicily, on Etna Damiano Caruso triumphs. Nibali fourth

The 34-year-old from Ragusa imposes himself in the fourth and last stage: his general too after the tug-of-war with Nibali, at the end of the fourth

Damiano Caruso won the Giro di Sicilia, ‘reborn’ in 2019 under the organization of RCS Sport / Gazzetta. The last stage, an uphill finish on Etna, went to the 34-year-old from Ragusa of Team Bahrain Victorious, who competed here with the blue jersey of the national team of coach Daniele Bennati. Today Caruso won the tug-of-war with Vincenzo Nibali, definitively detached less than 2 km from the finish of Etna, climbed from the side of Piano Provenzana. A few seconds behind Caruso were placed the South African Meintjes (Intermarché) and the Ecuadorian Cepeda (Drone Hopper-Androni) with Nibali fourth. So in the previous stages: in the first in Bagheria a sprint by Matteo Malucelli, in the second in Caltanissetta a short sprint and success by Damiano Caruso, while in Piazza Armerina on Thursday the solo triumph of the 19-year-old Croatian Miholjevic.

THE PROGRAM – Now, after the weekend dedicated to Paris-Roubaix, in Italy the Tour of the Alps will start from Monday, which as per tradition in recent years will cross over to Austria and will end on Friday 22. Then in May, from 6 to 29, space for the Giro d’Italia: away from Budapest, grand finale in Verona.
