Tradition too … evolves in Badminton

Bologna, 28 April 2022 – There are events that, in equestrian history, represent cornerstones of a tradition with iconic features. Badminton is definitely one of them. All outfit enthusiasts want to attend competitions at least once. And all eventers dream of being able to compete there.

The most beautiful names in the discipline have passed through Beaufort Castle and, to the sound of trophies, have written more than one important chapter of the discipline. The first winner, back in 1949, fu John Shedden with Mrs Home Kidson’s Golden Willow. The latest, in 2019 (in 2020 and 2021 the event was canceled due to the pandemic) was 2019 Piggy French (Great Britain) con Trevor Dickens’ Vanir Kamira. In between, all the most beautiful names in the suit ever. From Mark Phillips to Lucinda Prior-Palmer, from Mark Todd to Ginny Holgate, from Rodney Powell to Mary King. Without forgetting the most recent Nicolas Touzaint, Oliver Townend, William Fox-Pitt, Michael Jung and Andrew Nicholson.

After two years of absence, there is certainly great anticipation for the 2022 appointment, which will be held from 4 to 8 May. And that comes with the first novelty.

The Badminton Mitsubishi Motors trophy, as we have known it from 1992 to 2019

The trophy that we have learned to recognize over the years (from 1992 to 2019), with the three horses in a triangle, is retiring. It will be replaced by a new work by the sculptor Judy Boyt. For the realization of which, the artist used only materials from the Beaufort estate. Already author of the old trophy, this time the sculptress has arranged differently the three horses symbolizing the three specialties of the outfit. And she has revisited, updating them, even the details of the endings.

Marc Stevenson, of Stevenson Brothers Rocking Horses, produced the wooden base, using lumber from an oak from the estate. In the base a ‘secret’ drawer has been obtained which contains the list of all Badminton winners.

The silver used to make the horses contains pieces from Badminton House, to underline the iconic value of this recognition and tradition.
