Underestimating the U-23 Indonesian National Team, Malaysia U-23 National Team Get Karma Again at the 2021 SEA Games? : Okezone Ball

COACH The Malaysian U-23 National Team, Brad Maloney, underestimated the U-23 Indonesian National Team ahead of participating in the 2021 Vietnam SEA Games in mid next month. The Australian tactician said that the Indonesian U-23 national team made by Shin Tae-yong was not the top winner in the biennial multi-sport event.

Wednesday (6/4/2022), the draw for the 2021 SEA Games men’s soccer sport was held. The draw results put the hosts Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Timor Leste in Group A.

Then, Group B is occupied by Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore and Laos. The legendary Vietnamese footballer, Pham Thanh Luong, named Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand as candidates to win the 2021 SEA Games.

“Thailand is still the main competitor for the gold medal with Vietnam U-23 and also Indonesia. Indonesia has made great progress. Thailand and Indonesia are two teams that are directly competing with us for the gold medal,” said the player who brought Vietnam to win the 2008 AFF Cup, quoting from The Thao 247.

However, Pham Thanh Luong’s statement is not in line with Brad Maloney’s thoughts. He did not mention Indonesia as a champion candidate. Instead of entering the name of Indonesia, Brad Maloney even called the Philippines a team that has the potential to appear dangerous.

“Thailand will be strong because they have several players who are good in Europe. Likewise with the defending champion Vietnam,” said Brad Maloney quoting from the New Straits Times, Saturday (9/4/2022).

“We cannot underestimate the Philippines, which has a number of naturalized players. Likewise, Cambodia and Laos are developing with a number of their young players,” continued Brad Maloney.

So, will the statement above lead to karma for the Malaysia U-23 National Team when it comes to the 2021 SEA Games? Previously, Malaysia also underestimated Indonesia and as a result they were eliminated in the group stage of the 2020 AFF Cup and 2022 AFF U-23 Cup.

In the 2020 AFF Cup, Malaysia’s mainstay player, Safawi Rasid, said that Indonesia’s level was on par with Laos. As a result, Indonesia slaughtered Malaysia 4-1 and they were eliminated in the group phase.

“For me, any team, including Vietnam, Indonesia and Laos is the same. We can do something, get good results as long as we follow the coach’s instructions,” said Safawi as reported by Stadium Astro, Friday 10 December 2021.

Then before withdrawing from the 2022 AFF U-23 Cup, the U-23 Indonesian national team was underestimated by Malaysian midfielder, Fikri Azfar. He said he could beat the Indonesian U-23 national team even without core players.

“We can’t just rely on them (core players). It’s not that we can’t win, we have a lot of good players. Our task is clear, revenge (to Indonesia) with victory. If we win and emerge as champions, there will be no harsh criticism,” said Azfar.

However, Malaysia canceled the meeting with Indonesia because Shin Tae-yong’s squad was pushed back due to the effects of the Covid-19 storm. At the same time, Malaysia, which continued to appear, fell out in the group stage after losing 1-4 on aggregate to Laos.
