Danish success in South Korea: Victor Svendsen delivers the biggest result of his career

It is mostly Viktor Axelsen we are talking about in Denmark when it comes to results in international badminton.

But compatriot and namesake Victor Svendsen is now also joining the fray.

On Friday morning, he played in the semifinals of the Korea Open in South Korean Suncheon with a convincing victory in two sets over Indonesian Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.

21-14, 21-12, the victory ended up being in a one-sided affair, where Svendsen, who as number 75 on the world rankings was not exactly favorite against Rhustavito, who is number 24.

The 26-year-old from North Jutland is thus ready for the semi-finals of the tournament, which is a Super 500 tournament, which is the third highest on BWF’s World Tour.

And the result is by far his biggest in his career.

Victor Svendsen has previously won tournaments in Europe – and also became Danish champion last year – but there have been tournaments at a sportingly far worse level than the Korea Open.

Readings of cancellations
While two of the tournament’s best players, Jonathan Christie and Kidambi Srikanth, who are seeded three and five, meet in the second semifinal, Victor Svendsen faces Chinese Weng Hong Yang. And if you do not know him well, it is very understandable. He is number 156 in the world.

Victor Svendsen met compatriot Kim Bruun in the 1st round. But that was also the Danish element in that tournament.

In general, the cancellations have rained down over the Korea Open, which is partly due to the fact that the Asians have not gotten over the Corona at all. Especially in women’s doubles, it’s completely wrong. 11 cancellations meant that even though the hosts in the 11th hour threw in five local doubles, there were only ten pairs to start. Completely unheard of in a tournament at such a high level.

The situation was also not good in mixed doubles, where seven pairs withdrew, and this led to the most unusual that the organizers chose to make a new draw before the first matches the other day.

Victor Svendsen can not care about all that. He has already scored so many points that he jumps into the top 50 in the world.
