Van Halst critical of Barca attacker: ‘Memphis must perform twice as much’

Jan van Halst thoroughly enjoyed Pedri on Sunday during FC Barcelona’s La Liga match against Sevilla, but he is not yet impressed by Ferran Torres. The Ziggo Sport analyst wonders why the Spanish international is preferred over Memphis Depay.

Torres missed the necessary opportunities in Camp Nou. Van Halst is critical of the attacker’s assumptions, but also of his completion. “He does everything very hard. That is not necessary, it has to be in the corner. To round off chauvinistically: Memphis can also be done from the left, right? This is really a case of a player who suits Xavi and was also taken by him. And not Memphis. Memphis has to perform twice as much, because he is still from the previous trainer.”

Van Halst was impressed by Pedri. “What a fantastic player. To have all that self-awareness at that age. It was a magnificent goal.” However, he does not think that the playmaker belongs in a row with Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé. “Not yet. He has not yet had the opportunity to show it at European top level. But in terms of talent, he is really at the top of Europe. He can play football so fantastically. There is so much insight in it.”

Van Halst sees an important difference in comparison with Frenkie de Jong. “Pedri really has the depth to the front. Frenkie de Jong has learned that very forced. On Sunday he also went a few times that he went unnecessarily deep.”
