Mike Tyson once complained that social media had gotten people used to being spanked for disrespect. Now a plane passenger has apparently provoked the ex-boxing world champion sitting in front of him in the plane until he struck. The accompanying video went viral.
DFormer world boxing champion Mike Tyson punched another passenger on a plane in the United States. A cellphone video released Thursday by TMZ shows the 55-year-old former heavyweight champion punching a young man in the face behind him on the plane behind him.
According to TMZ, the passenger provoked Tyson and continued to talk to him. “Iron Mike” was initially friendly, but then asked the man to calm down. When the passenger failed to do so, Tyson hit him several times, the website reports, citing a witness. A photo shows that the passenger sustained minor head injuries.
The incident reportedly happened while Tyson was about to fly to Florida from San Francisco. The boxer left the machine before the start. The airline JetBlue and representatives of Tyson initially did not comment on the incident. According to TMZ, the San Francisco police said two people involved in the case had been arrested in the meantime. One of the men suffered minor injuries, but hardly wanted to provide any information about the incident and “did not want to cooperate further with the police investigation”.
Notorious for his hard punches, Tyson is considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers in history. However, he repeatedly made negative headlines and got into trouble with the law. In the early 1990s, he was sentenced to several years in prison after allegations of rape. Tyson recently wrote on his Facebook account: “Social media has gotten you all too used to the fact that you can disrespect people without getting a slap in the face.”
