Wilnsdorf’s best athletes honored | we win

(wS/wi) Wilnsdorf 04/28/2022 | Last Tuesday it was literally festive in the Festhalle Wilnsdorf, because the red carpet was rolled out. Mayor Hannes Gieseler had invited to the athletes’ ceremony of the community of Wilnsdorf, where a total of ten individual athletes from Wilnsdorf aged 13 to 71 and two teams were honored for their outstanding sporting successes.

After the athletes were honored last year only digitally due to corona, the mayor was able to welcome the athletes, their companions, employees of the municipal administration, representatives of the Wilnsdorf parliamentary groups as well as Tillmann Reusch (Sparkasse Siegen), Reinhard Rübsamen (Chairman GSV Wilnsdorf), Marco Michel (GSV Managing Director) and Ottmar Haardt (Chairman of the District Sports Association) received again personally.

Gieseler, himself an enthusiastic sportsman, opened the small ceremony and in his greeting emphasized the challenges that the corona virus brought with it for the sports year 2021. Because many competitions and tournaments were cancelled, training could not take place at times. “But the clubs have found a remedy with creative solutions. I think that’s great,” said the mayor. “Despite the difficult conditions, you have and have made exceptional sporting achievements in the past year, which we rightly want to honor and recognize today.”

The athletes were introduced by GSV Managing Director Marco Michel in a relaxed atmosphere. A wide variety of sports was represented at the ceremony – from tennis to judo and horseback riding to apparatus gymnastics. The first in the series of honorees was Johanna Stockschläder from Gernsdorf, who won the German handball championship title with Borussia Dortmund in 2021. In addition, the 27-year-old rose to become a national player and took part in the World Cup in Spain. Since she was unfortunately unable to attend the sports awards ceremony in person, she was connected to the Festhalle via video call and talked to the mayor about her beginnings as a handball player and her career advancement. In conversation with Gieseler, the athletes chatted inside out and were able to give the guests a little insight into their respective sport and their successes. 13-year-old Marie Ax explained the different colors of the judo belt and their meaning, the tennis players from the Wilgersdorf tennis club advertised for young players and 14-year-old horseback rider Hanna Bräuer explained how much fun the sport is for her, but also how much work is behind it .

The honorees received a lot of praise and recognition for their great sporting successes. Mayor Hannes Gieseler was sure that he would see a few familiar faces at the sports awards ceremony again next year: “Stay with us!”
