The Zaragoza association El Basket es Vida, coordinated by Alberto Béjar, carried out this past weekend an aesthetic refurbishment work in the basement of the Children’s Hospital. The action affected the functional tests and radiology room; specifically, the waiting area for check-ups after overcoming cancer.
“We have converted that waiting room -explained Béjar- into a basketball court, investing the money raised in the charity match last January in the Príncipe Felipe pavilion, with many familiar faces from the city. It was the second edition, and 4,300 euros were raised, with the comedian Diego Peña as master of ceremonies, the professional braid María Mateo and various players, such as the mayor of Zaragoza Jorge Azcón, the rapper El Chojín or the singer Manuel de la Cueva ” .
After the first match, held in December 2019, all proceeds were donated to Aspanoa and the Spanish Association Against Cancer in Zaragoza. Now direct investment has been made in the Children’s, which makes this bitter pill for the kids a different situation, even if only for a while. “Paint has not been used, but PVC on tile. In addition, baskets, an electronic scoreboard and a television have been installed. with videos of the association, so that they can see the plays and best moments of the matches held so far”, Béjar pointed out.
The effort has found echoes among individuals and companies. “In fact -Béjar clarified- a couple from Calatayud has donated 500 euros from their wedding details, the FNAC has given away the television and A framed shirt has been placed, signed and dedicated by Ricky Rubio, the NBA player, from his last stage as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves. The rest of the proceeds have been invested in the materials and the conditioning of the room, whose appearance after the transformation has already had positive effects on the center’s own staff, both medical and logistical.
“It is not the same to wait in a cold room, with neutral paint and an anodyne appearance, than to do it surrounded by color, sports references and a screen”, concluded the ideologue of the initiative.
