The “tanking” can make it possible to be richer… The proof in the Thunder where the majority of the players will win a bonus of approximately one million dollars! This is obviously not a performance bonus since OKC finished penultimate in the Western Conference with 24 wins for 58 losses.
In fact, if each player in the squad enjoys a bonus, it is simply because the leaders have not spent enough this season. As we know, in the NBA, the “salary cap” and the “luxury tax” were put in place to penalize the richest franchises, or at least prevent them from signing four or five superstars at the maximum salary. This is what has always allowed forces to be balanced.
But this famous “salary cap” also obliges the 30 franchises to spend this money. The NBA thus requires that the 30 teams spend at least 101 million dollars, or 90% of the “salary cap” set at 112 million dollars in 2021/22. If a team does not reach the 101 million dollars, then it must pay the difference to its players! It had already happened in the past on the side of Philadelphia.
At trade deadline, OKC refused to trade draft picks for big paydays
This year, the Thunder only spent $79 million on payroll, so there’s $22 million in the coffers, and the rules say that that amount must be shared with the players on the roster. This is how Theo Maledon and his teammates, 25 players, will share this big pot.
« We are grateful for that. That’s about all I can say about it smiles Kenrich Williams, who usually earns two million dollars a year.
According to The Oklahoman, the regulations stipulate that players who have played 41 games or more receive the full bonus, and we are talking about a million dollars. Then, it is in proportion to the number of matches played for the others.
« At the time of the trade deadline, we did not appreciate what we were offered to use this sum in exchange for Draft choices » justified Sam Presti. “I’d still rather have those opportunities in the Draft than the things that were presented to us. Our players are going to benefit from this decision, and I don’t know if it will happen again in the future that a franchise spends so little. »
