Gantoise has reinforced her title ambitions with a 1-3 away win against Dragons. The national champion won in the first leg of the hockey final and will go into the return game on Sunday with a good starting position.
Gantoise cashes in on the dominance in the first half
With Gantoise and Dragons, the same teams were in the women’s hockey final as last year. Gantoise hoped to extend her national title, Dragons hoped for its first title since 1994.
In the first quarter it was mainly the Gentenaars who asserted themselves. That predominance was quickly converted into a lead via Ballenghien spearhead, with her 24th goal of the season.
Dragons had to start, but had a lot of trouble with Gantoise’s organization, which could be dangerous a few times via penalty corner.
Gantoise remained the best team in the second quarter. After a nice attack over several stations, the ball came in front of Gasparie’s stick, who only had to tap in.
Even before the break it seemed to be sinking or sinking for Dragons, the Antwerp players should be happy that there was only 0-2 on the board at the break.
Dragons grabs life preserver for the return match
Gantoise was in control and there seemed to be no problem in the third quarter, especially after Schreurs made it 0-3. But out of nowhere, Dragons grabbed another life preserver.
After a mistake by Vandenborre, a penalty corner followed for Dragons, which was tagged in by the young Mariën after some wrangling. The home team found a second breath.
Dragons came closest to scoring via Raye and Vilar del Valle, but Gantoise got away twice. Even in the nervous final minutes, the 1-3 remained on the scoreboard.
Gantoise will be in an excellent starting position for Sunday’s return match, although nothing has been played with a gap of two goals.
