The judoka of the Pamplona Swimming Club, Javier Lassa, was proclaimed the Spanish Judo Champion in the -60 kg category at the Spanish University Championship held on May 15 in San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia). Javier attended the competition as a member of the UNED team. His partner Lucas Monreal also competed with him, who on this occasion represented the UPNA. Lucas was bronze in -90 kg.
The representation of the Navarrese judokas in this championship included two more athletes representing the UPNA: Paula Beorlegui (-52 kg), who won the bronze medal, and Sergio Palacios (-60 kg), who finally came in seventh position in your category. The UPNA team was directed by the coach of the Pamplona Swimming Club, Juan Azpiroz.
To get his gold, Javier Lassa had to prevail in the four fights he did. In the first of them he beat the judoka of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Later, in the quarterfinal round, he beat his training partner from the Public University of Navarra, Sergio Palacios. Already in the semifinals, he faced the Aragonese representative from the San Jorge University, thus achieving the pass to the final, in which the competitor from the University of Valencia, champion the previous year, awaited him. On this occasion, Javier did not give his rival options and won after a good action with which he managed to score ippon.
Lucas Monreal, for his part, played five games, winning four of them against his opponents from the University of Almería, the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas, the University of Castilla la Mancha and the Autonomous University of Madrid. He only lost in the quarters against his opponent from the University of Alicante. The fact that, in his last year of master’s degree, this is the fourth medal won by Lucas in the Spanish University Championships stands out, among which are two silvers, in the 2018 and 2021 editions, and two bronzes, in the editions of 2019 and 2022.
