Kirsty Gilmour wins the “highest quality” silver medal at the European Championships

Lanarkshire duo Kirsty Gilmour and Alex Dunn won silver medals at the 2022 European Championships in Madrid.

Bothwell’s Gilmour won his fourth European medal and third silver, while Motherwell’s Dunn and partner Alex Hall of Mauchline became the first Scottish doubles pair to compete in a European final, but fell short.

As in 2016 and 2017, Gilmour faced old foe Carolina Marin of Spain, who won in straight sets.

Marin, making a long-awaited return to the sport after injury, won a sixth title 21-10 21-12.

However, the 28-year-old Kirsty improved on the bronze medal she won last year in kyiv and scored some nice wins, including against second-seeded Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark.

She said: “I think if I look back at all my silver medals, that’s probably my best quality, if you look at the composition of the podium.

“Beating Mia in the semis was a really good thing to score and not have to settle for bronze like I did last year.
