The Latvian National Sports Council decided to call on the government to allocate 426,692 euros from the funds to the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) to cover the needs of several sports federations, the MES Communication Department informed LETA.
180,000 euros are planned to be paid to the Latvian Hockey Federation to cover the expenses for the preparation of the Latvian U20 youth national team and participation in the 2022 World Hockey Championships for young people in Group A. Another 35,000 euros are intended for insuring the players of the Latvian men’s hockey national team in connection with the participation of the players in the national team training process, test games and the 2022 World Hockey Championship.
Up to 15,444 euros are needed for the Latvian Chess Federation to cover the expenses for the participation of the Latvian national team in the 2022 World Chess Olympiad. The Council took note of the fact that the 2022 World Chess Olympics was originally scheduled to take place in Russia, but following the war against Ukraine, the International Chess Federation decided to relocate the World Chess Olympics to India, resulting in a significant increase in travel costs.
Considering that after a two-year break in 2022, the international athletics calendar has been renewed in full and several international championships postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic will take place, up to 79,248 euros will be allocated to the Latvian Athletics Union to cover the costs of participation in World Cup, World U-20 Championship and European U-18 Championship.
Up to 117,000 euros are needed for the Latvian Luge Federation to cover expenses related to the participation of Latvian juniors and youth teams in the World Luge Championships, taking into account the decision of the International Luge Federation that the Junior and Youth World Luge Championships will no longer take place in one place. instead, each age group has its own competition calendar, which unexpectedly increases the cost of training and competition.
