Meijer candid: ”The last few years have not been easy”

Gerard Meijer is now 86 years old and has already experienced a lot at his Feyenoord. During his book presentation, the former caretaker candidly talks about his past at the Rotterdam club.

“But I don’t blow my mind, because a caregiver has a relationship of trust with players and trainers,” Meijer says in conversation with the club. General newspaper. ”I’ve been through some wonderful things. Ernst Happel who always called me ‘Herr Meijers’. The successes in the 1970s with Coen Moulijn, Rinus Israel, Wim Jansen and Willem van Hanegem. I had a love-hate relationship with Willem. He could grumble, but what a winner.”

Meijer also says that, as far as he is concerned, he doesn’t have to live much longer. “I was back in the cockpit on Sunday. I’ll be wrecked when I get home. The last few years have not been easy, but the memories are great. That is why there was still a book, while I have said for years that I never wanted to write it. No, it’s not for later. There is no later for me. The book is there because I am proud to have been with this great club for so long.”
