Olympic champion Achtereekte (32) switches from skating to cycling

Achtereekte skated for the Jumbo-Visma team for the last five years. She is now cycling within the same organization.

“It will take some getting used to, but I assume that I will learn those skills quickly,” she expects. “I’m going to copy the art of my teammates and hope that I can first play a role within the team in the service of others.”

Already at the Dutch National Championships next month

Her contract with the skating team expired in April. As of June 1, she is officially part of the cycling team, but on Wednesday she is already going to a training camp. Jumbo-Visma expects Achtereekte to be quickly prepared for the big games. In any case, she will participate in the Dutch championship on June 25.

“Carlijn does miss the routine of cycling in a peloton and there is also work to be done on a technical and tactical level, but she also brings a lot to our team,” says Esra Tromp, manager of Team Jumbo-Visma Women. “A top sports mentality and experience with performing at the highest level, for example.”

“She dares to make choices, sets priorities and knows what she has to do to achieve her goals. She breathes top sport. That knowledge and attitude are valuable to our team.”
