On May 9, Germán Ayala Arellano, technical director of the national judo teams, sent Prof. Miguel Ángel Ortega Blancas, president of the Judo Association of the State of Yucatán, a call requesting the young athlete Elías Cuevas Aguilar, for high-performance training at the Tlalpan Sports Village of CONADE, with a view to his attendance at international judo events. the magnitude of the Central American Games, the Pan American Games and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This call constitutes an extraordinary opportunity for an athlete whose career is already very outstanding at a national and even international level. The possible presence of a Yucatecan in sports fairs of this level is a justified cause of pride for our entity, and highlights the good level of Yucatecan sport. Before, other athletes have reached very high levels in international competitions, such has been the case of weightlifting, or diving, and now, judo joins these outstanding participations that must carry the name of Yucatan as high as possible for them.
Elías Cuevas Aguilar is a young judoka who has had a brilliant career from a very young age. He has belonged to the state team of this sport since 2011, and since then he began to stand out on the rise. He starts in the children’s category, and currently competes in the junior category. He has a pretty impressive resume of wins. More than ten times he has been state judo champion, more than fifteen times he has been national champion in different national tournaments, five consecutive times he has won the title of the important national tournament “Tomoyoshi Yamaguchi”, which allowed him to qualify as many times for the National Judo Olympiad. The government of the state of Yucatan conferred on him the State Award for Sports Merit in 2015, in 2016 he won the International Gold Medal at the Children’s Pan American Games, again he has a gold medal at the United States of America Open in 2019 , has obtained silver medals at the Pan American Children’s Championship in 2016 and at the International Open of the United States of America in 2019. In that same year of 2019, he represented Mexico at the Cadet World Cup held in Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan.
To these outstanding merits must be added his recent and important triumphs. In the Judotechnic Cup fair, in December 2021, he won first place. In the “Tomoyoshi Yamaguchi” National Tournament, held in Mazatlan, Sinaloa in March of this same year, he won the silver medal. Recently, last April, at the CONADE Macroregional, in Oaxaca, Oaxaca, he won first place. Without a doubt, he has written a brilliant career in a record time of participation for his young age. And let’s not mention the triumphs that in the not too distant future he can achieve. Why not, can we expect to see him at the 2024 Paris Olympics? If his upward trajectory continues as it is now, it’s not a remote possibility.
On the other hand, Elías Cuevas Aguilar is a happy eighteen-year-old teenager, who is a good student, who is in his last semester of high school, and has already one foot in college; he has excellent grades, has a good relationship with all of his classmates, and can be seen walking regularly through the gardens and grove of the Escuela Modelo on Paseo Montejo. His father and his grandfather are also modellers, so he and his brother are the third generation in the institution. He is a proud member of the great modeling family.
Elías is an example for the children and young people of our state, his tenacity and perseverance give an account and example for others that dreams are possible, as long as we put all our effort and will into them. We applaud his brilliant career, and we put all our hope in seeing him present at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
GO ELÍAS, YUCATAN IS WITH YOU!
