For the first time in her career, Jil Teichmann is in the round of 16 of a Grand Slam. So far, the 24-year-old has never made it past the second round. After her dramatic victory against two-time Grand Slam winner Vikoria Asarenka, Teichmann is the last Swiss hope at Roland Garros. But who is Teichmann? We introduce the Swiss in a little more detail.

Teichmann was not born in Switzerland, but in Barcelona. Her parents emigrate from Zurich to Spain. Teichmann has lived in the Spanish city for 15 years. She still has a place of residence in Barcelona – but also in Biel. Teichmann will be accompanied on the tour by a Spanish trainer and a Spanish physiotherapist. Not surprisingly, with this Spanish background, sand is also her preferred surface, even if Teichmann describes herself as an all-rounder.

From crowdfunding for a career to the round of 16

The path to professional tennis is not easy for the Swiss. Even as a junior, she collected money through crowdfunding to make the dream of Junior Grand Slam tournaments possible. She is steadily and carefully working her way forward. At 22, in 2019, she made it into the top 100 for the first time. Not only that: she won her first tournaments at WTA level in Prague and Palermo. In 2020 there will be a final participation – but no victory.

At the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati 2021, Teichmann is definitely in the top 50. She qualifies for the final. To get into the final, she knocked out three top 15 players from the tournament. Including Naomi Osaka and Belinda Bencic. Only Ashley Barty, the best player in the world at the time, can stop Teichmann. She ended the year in 37th place.

Since the beginning of the year, Teichmann has steadily fought his way forward. She is currently ranked 24th in the world. With the round of 16 qualifiers in Paris, she is already knocking on the top 20. With a win against the American Sloane Stephens, she will certainly advance into the top 20 – a jump that was announced and is now becoming a fact.
