A week before the start of the Tour of Italy, Simon Yates flexed his muscles towards his competitors. In the Tour of Asturias, the Briton won 2 out of 3 stages. Due to a lesser day on Saturday, Yates has to leave the overall victory to Colombian Ivan Sosa.
Lots of climbing in the 65th edition of the Tour of Asturias. Simon Yates saw the ideal preparation for the Giro in the three days, where he will start next Friday as one of the favorites.
Yates was unstoppable in both Friday’s stage to Pola de Lena and Sunday’s stage to Oviedo. Twice he was allowed to triumph solo. In Saturday’s stage he took – consciously or not – a day off, as a result of which he would not play a role in the standings.
Ivan Sosa laid the foundation for his overall victory on the way to Cangas del Narcea. For the 5th time in a row we get a South American final winner in “the little Vuelta”. Sosa succeeds his compatriot Nairo Quintana, who also inherited the victory of Alarcon who was caught doping in 2017. In between, Richard Carapaz won 2 times in a row, in 2018 and 2019.
