Arco FM’s program Tiro al Arco deals in depth with the issue of the necessary modifications in the El Sardinero Sport Fields, on the one hand to comply with the requirements of the Professional Football League, and on the other for a simple matter safety of people attending matches
It is often said that joy does not last long in a poor man’s house. In the case of Racing de Santander, the celebration for promotion to the Second Division, achieved on May 1 after the draw against Celta B, is still very fresh.
However, the issue of the state of the stadium has been going on for quite some time, and now it is more urgent due to the team’s sporting situation. Next season, the team is going to face teams like Zaragoza, Leganés or Burgos. And depending on how the promotion phase to First Division turns out and which teams achieve permanence in the silver category, they could go through the historic Campos de Sport of Spanish football such as Sporting de Gijón, Oviedo, Las Palmas, Tenerife or Málaga.
But the stadium is far from its best condition. There are elements that need to be changed, from doors or seats to the lighting system. It could even reach the surreal situation that the bulbs that are worse are removed, but they are not replaced by new ones. In other words, Racing could have to ask the Professional Football League to play their games during the day because they cannot illuminate the pitch enough for visibility during the games.
This week, our fellow Archers, at Arco FM, have analyzed the situation in depth. Counting the point at which the City Council is when it comes to being able to allocate resources that serve to clean up the facilities, which are already 34 years old and in need of a major facelift.
In the sports program that most follows the news of Racing in Cantabria, they have provided a lot of context to explain that this situation has been in a state of paralysis for some time. And there have been many occasions that requests have come from the club for the City Council to get down to work, taking into account that the stadium is municipal property. The newspaper library has registered these requests, and also the announcements of the Consistory to carry out necessary actions. But they don’t finish arriving.
And the Association of Peñas del Racing, facing the last game of the season at home, this Sunday against Valladolid Promesas (6:00 p.m., from 5:00 p.m. you can follow the preview on the station), is calling for that the fans go to the field with yellow vests to protest this situation, which seems unsustainable.
A meeting between the parties is awaited to see if progress is made and how actions can be taken as quickly as possible. With the approval of the municipal comptroller, and with the uncertainty of whether you can count on remnants that are in the coffers of the Municipal Sports Institute or if the funds must come from elsewhere.
