The Interamerican University and SUAGM add championships during the Sports Festival

The Interamerican University added two additional championships and the Taínas of the Ana G. Méndez University System (SUAGM) one to his list of triumphs in the Sports Festival 2021-2022 of the Interuniversity Athletic League (LAI) which takes place in Ponce.

The Tigres Yomar González, Derek Torres and Armando Díaz defeated the Pioneros de la Pontificia Universidad Católica, José Cabrera, Franklin Rodríguez and Armando Mercado, 3-2 to win the men’s table tennis championship based at the sports center of the Catholic institution .

I have mixed feelings. Last semester we didn’t have the opportunity to train as much as we wanted. I was able to apply from January to May and squeeze. I was training in different places like Utuado and Guaynabo. You saw the result and the work”, González said.

“This (the championship) is what I have been thinking about for many months. If you want to achieve something, you have to visualize it all the time. Before the game I go to the bathroom, I talk in front of the mirror. I think this is what gives me more moments of growth”, added the Inter-American racket.

The third place belongs to the Taínos of the UAGM.

In the meantime in women’s soccer, Angela Díaz scored the winning goal in the 66th minute for the Interamericana to return to the top of the university podium. The now champions of the LAI defeated the Jerezanas of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus 1-0at the Francisco “Paquito” Montaner stadium.

“It’s a pride for me. A long time since the first championship in 2018. The pandemic passed and we were preparing ourselves day by day. This was the goal. It was not easy. We played against a team that was also preparing for a long time. They are the Jerezanas, everyone knows them. It was an excellent match. Thank God we got the result. Very happy with my teammates,” said Díaz.

Ana G. Méndez shined in women’s table tennis

The UAGM Taínas won the women’s table tennis championship on Wednesday at the Católica sports center in Ponce.

The team of Nerideé Niño, Fabiola Díaz and Lineris Rivera defeated the Interamerican Tigresses, Leyla Goméz, Nicole Malavé and Mileysha Sánchez, 3-0.

“I feel super happy in my first year to have won a medal and even more so if it’s gold,” said Fabiola, the youngest of the Díaz sisters, who joined the Taína team this year.

I feel very happy with the support of my family, my team. I never felt any pressure. this was for fun”, indicated the also racket of the National Team along with her sisters Melanie and Adriana Díaz, in addition to Daniely Ríos.

Third place in the women’s branch went to Juanas from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez.
