The silhouettes of sneakers they are becoming more extreme, as the recent launches of Adidas, Yeezy, Givenchy, among others, demonstrate. Even the luxury brand Balmain joins the trends with an avant-garde model that rivals the craziest sneakers on the market.
The new Balmain silhouette
With the launch of what seems to be one of the most cutting-edge shoes, the “Unicorn”the creative director of Balmain, Olivier Rousteing, unveiled a silhouette that seems as out of this world as its fantastic name. The sculptural style, wrapped in a unique construction of curved lines, is created by angular layers that form an upper that is slim and voluminous at the same time. Three rubber bands connect the top to the bottom, which—although everything in these sneakers it’s eye-catching—it’s by far the most noticeable part.
The sole, made with innovative technology, is made up of eight sections joined together to perfectly show off the cushioning system characteristic of Balmain. The logos on the sole and the pressure button seem to have been reduced to a minimum in the “Unicorn”, probably to show the layout in its entirety. Balmain uses multicolored neoprene and calfskin for the material of the model that will undoubtedly become one of the most popular sneakers.
Olivier Rousteing promotes the futuristic line at Balmain
Since becoming creative director of Balmain in 2011, Olivier Rousteing has constantly sought to rethink and reinvent the typical design of sneakers. With this latest release, it has more than achieved its goal.
According to Balmainthe “Unicorn” is an example of Rousteing’s “Renewed French Style”, which “seeks to challenge today’s typical tennis design”. In particular, he was inspired by the futuristic aesthetics of the movies of Blade Runner and on Don Aronow’s streamlined boats.
