Anyone who still invests in fossil infrastructure such as oil wells or coal mines is a “moral and economic idiot,” says none other than UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. In fact, if global warming is to be stopped, CO2 must no longer be released into the atmosphere as quickly as possible. Which means that no more petrol or petroleum can be burned. This episode is about why some companies and governments still rely on developing new oil wells, namely the planned “East African Crude Oil Pipeline”.
The EACOP pipeline is designed to transport crude oil 1,444 kilometers from the Hoima pumping station in Uganda along Lake Victoria to the Tanga oil terminal in Tanzania on the Indian Ocean. Benjamin Pohl from the climate think tank Adelphi explains why a great wealth of resources does not necessarily lead to more prosperity in a country, but has even turned out to be a “curse”. At the same time, he explains why the industrialized countries, with their massive CO2 emissions, are hardly willing to give poor countries like Uganda guidelines for their own development in terms of climate justice. In Uganda, however, massive protests against the pipeline project are also coming from the population, as Cordula Eubel reports.
