MLB suspends 12 Angels and Mariners members after brawl

  • MLB: Mass brawl between Angels and Mariners
  • Major League Baseball (MLB) issues severe penalties
  • Coaches and managers are not allowed to appeal

The Angels and Mariners were informed of the disciplinary sanction on Monday after players from both clubs during Sunday’s game in Anaheim.

MLB Senior VP Michael Hill confirmed the penalties for a total of twelve players and coaches. The penalties also include a number of undisclosed fines.

For the Angels, manager Phil Nevin received the harshest punishment in the form of a 10-game suspension. Injured third baseman Anthony Rendon and assistant pitching coach Dom Chiti each received a five-game suspension, while pitchers Andrew Wantz, Ryan Tepera and Raisel Iglesias received a three-game suspension.

Mass brawl after pitcher’s ‘deliberate hits’

Bench coach Ray Montgomery and MLB interpreter Manny Del Campo will miss two games, and catching coach Bill Haselman will miss one game. On the Mariners side, shortstop JP Crawford and outfielders Jesse Winker and Julio Rodríguez were penalized.

Winker, who started the brawl after Wantz hit him in the hip with a pitch in the second inning, will sit out a total of seven games. Crawford will miss five games while Rodríguez will miss two games.

The league’s announcement also states that if the Mariners and Angels play the Orioles and White Sox, respectively, the bans on all players will come into effect. All players filing an appeal will have their disciplinary sanction temporarily suspended until the case is resolved. Wantz is currently the only listed player who has not appealed the suspension.

With managers and coaches barred from appealing the league’s decision, the Angels will go into the game with a smaller roster. The memo also included an explanation of each penalty. The league stated that Nevin and Wantz got their punishment for the pitcher’s “deliberate hit” that started the chaos.

After winning Sunday’s game 2-1 after the break, the Angels are now third in the AL West with 35-40 points. The Mariners are currently fourth in the division with a 34-40 record.
