ÖFB-Cup: Salzburg starts the new season against Fügen

ÖFB Cup

Exactly 56 days after Red Bull Salzburg’s 3-0 final triumph over Guntamatic Ried, the Uniqa ÖFB Cup started its new season with the draw for the first round on Sunday. ORF weather presenter Christa Kummer played the “lucky angel” and gave the defending champion a duel with Fügen from the Tyrolean league.

As in the previous season, 64 clubs are taking part in 2022/23. The field of participants consists of twelve clubs from the Admiral Bundesliga, twelve clubs from the Admiral 2nd league (Young Violets Austria Vienna, SK Sturm Graz II and SK Rapid II are not eligible, FC Liefering did not) and 40 clubs from the regional associations. The first round will be played from July 15th to 17th.

Compared to last season, there will be some innovations starting this season. In the first three rounds, the participants from the regional associations and the second division will be divided into two groups (East and West) based on geographical criteria. As a result, there are more regional duels in the first rounds, and direct duels between clubs from the Bundesliga are only possible later in the competition.
