Heading to the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the Mexico national team directed by Gerardo Martino and that of Uruguay with Diego Alonso at the helm, they will meet in a warm-up match to be played in Glendale, United States.

Mexico was installed in Group C of the World Cup along with Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Poland. Uruguay is in Group H with Portugal, Ghana and South Korea.

Both Martino with the ‘Tri’ and Alonso with the ‘Celeste’ have expressed their intention to play their preparation matches against opponents with characteristics similar to those of their World Cup rivals.

First friendly with Alonso as manager of Uruguay

In December 2021, Diego Alonso was called in an emergency to try to lift the Uruguayan team that was seventh in the World Cup qualifying round and was out of Qatar-2022.

Alonso coached in the final qualifying stretch of four matches and won them all to put Uruguay in third place in the Conmebol tie.

Now “being world champions” is Alonso’s goal, who inherited a Uruguayan team with several historic veterans such as goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, defender Diego Godín, and attackers Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez.

Midfielder Federico Valverde, recent champion of the Champions League with Real Madrid, is outlined to be Alonso’s orchestrator, who has been promoting youngsters such as winger Mathías Olivera and winger Facundo Pellistri.

Except for Luis Suárez, all of them were summoned by Alonso for the preparation matches that Uruguay will have against Mexico and the United States.

Martino will consolidate his idea in Mexico

In April, when this warm-up match was announced, Martino defined the Uruguayan team as “a South American power” that “may have certain similarities with Argentina, although the way of playing is different.”

The previous Saturday, Mexico beat Nigeria 2-1. Among his conclusions, Martino pointed out that in his game the ‘Tri’ recovered some “continuity, beauty and freshness”, but stressed that he still has to improve in forcefulness.

This match against the African representative, Martino faced it with an alternative line-up and it is expected that the game against Uruguay will be played with a team more attached to the eleven type that played the tie and with more of its figures that play in Europe.

June 5 Mexico will have its third consecutive preparation match against Ecuador at Soldier Field in Chicago, while on the same day, Uruguay will play against the United States at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.
