Tennessee Baseball-Notre Dame umpires explain ejections of Drew Gilbert and Frank Anderson

The Tennessee vs. Notre Dame baseball umpiring team issued a statement Friday regarding the ejection of Drew Gilbert in the fifth inning.

“Tennessee #1 Drew Gilbert discussed several pitches during the top of the second inning, coming off center field,” umpiring crew chief Billy Van Raaphorst told NCAA Baseball’s Knoxville Regional Tremendous Pool Reporter Mike. Wilson of the Knoxville Information Sentinel. “To start the next inning I spoke to the player between innings, advising him to direct his comments only to his team, not our team or the other team. He said that he is fine and that he just gets emotional.

“During the fifth inning after strike one, Tennessee batter Gilbert yelled a swear word, followed by another swear word as he left the box and was subsequently ejected.”

Gilbert and Anderson will also miss Saturday’s game against the Preventing Irish due to their rule ejections.

Gilbert was upset with a 1-1 hit from home plate umpire Kellen Levy. He turned to Levy and expressed his frustration, using choice words. Levy threw it away.

Vitello and Anderson ran off the bench as Gilbert was sent off. Anderson was also ejected. It’s Anderson’s second ejection this season. He was also released against Alabama on April 16.
