The play that went wrong for Gago with Correa

There were two strategies that did not work out for Fernando Gago. Not even the match, of course, and not the one involving a footballer: Javier Correa. When everything seemed to indicate that Enzo Copetti, who was not injured and was coming at a good time, would continue to be among the starting 11, the coach leaned towards the Cordovan. Why? Although he will never acknowledge it publicly, he would have bet that Correa will show an outstanding performance to take a step forward towards his desire to at least reactivate a chance that the club would consider making a financial effort and retaining the striker. If that was what Gago was looking for with Correa, of course he did not find it in the defeat of Racing by 2-1 against Agropecuario, for the 16th round of the Argentine Cup.

The effect that was produced definitely undermined the DT’s desire for Correa to remain in Racing. As against River Plate of Uruguay, the center-attacker had several scoring situations and could not achieve them due to failures in the definition or good interventions by the rival goalkeeper, and again he was left in the eye of the storm, pointed out by many as the person responsible for that the team was eliminated from another competition, this time the Copa Argentina. Why would you have chosen to put him against Agropecuario and not on Sunday against Godoy, Cruz, with more margin for error? Perhaps the DT thought that the soybean team would be more accessible and that Correa could make a bigger difference…

Beyond Gago, why won’t Racing retain Correa?

Racing had, in principle, a purchase option of 1,100,000 dollars that was nullified because the player did not meet one of the requirements: that he play, at least, a certain number of minutes in official matches. But from Avellaneda they did not move from the proposal for that amount, while in Mexico they insisted that they would only release the soccer player for the sale of the entire pass at a figure of 2,500,000 dollars.

With Correa’s continuity ruled out, Racing will have to go for another 9. The talks would be advanced by Maximiliano Romero, from the PSV Reserve in the Netherlands. This attacker was a teammate of Gago in Vélez, in 2019-2020, which is why he knows him very well. Also, the club wants a winger. And the target is Johan Carbonero, from Gymnastics. The possible arrival of him is not well seen by a large part of the fans because the Colombian is being prosecuted for harassment and attempted sexual abuse. Rubén Capriasoccer adviser, referred to the subject this Wednesday.
