In the end, Martin Setz and Erik Abramov both became German champions without a fight. “Nevertheless, both had to fight their way to the final,” coach Mario Schendel puts the situation into perspective. Both were very focused and largely went through their fights without making mistakes.
Martin Setz initially completed four fights, all of which he won with ippon, before his opponent Lukas Klemm did not compete in the final. “It was his plan to come here and become German champion. He did it,” says Mario Schendel. He now wants to see how things are going internationally.
Erik Abramov also made it to the final with ease. He won all three fights in a time well under a minute with ippon. Losseni Kone, the opponent in the final, also did not appear as he was injured and needs to be fit for international duties in the coming weeks. Erik Abramov also became German champion.
Maximilian Standke won bronze. He ended the first two fights early and fought in the quarterfinals in the golden score waza-ari. In the semifinals, he lost after seven and a half minutes with waza-ari, fighting for bronze. Here, too, it went into the Golden Score, which he also won with Waza-ari and was third.
A fourth athlete, who trains in Potsdam but competes for Mannheim, also won bronze. Louis Mai won two bouts with ippon after a bye, but then lost the semifinals and fought for bronze. He won this fight after 40 seconds and finished third. Marvin Belz was now fifth in the DEM for the fourth time. “Fifth is also an achievement, but it just doesn’t pay off,” regrets Mario Schendel. “In the semifinals he was close to victory, but in the end it was only enough for fifth place – wooden medal subscription!”
Yvo Witassek was seventh. “He’s still a bit too light at 102 kg, so we still have to improve on that.”
Johann Voigt was eliminated on the second day, as were Kilian Ochs, Joseph Lehniger, Luc Meyer, Elias Pracht and Bennet Pröhl from the first day in the middle weight classes.
