Olympic vice-champion Kevin Mayer started his decathlon well with a 100m run in 10 sec 62 on Saturday for the first of his ten events at the World Championships in Eugene (Oregon).
Mayer clocked the fourth-fastest 100m of his career, just shy of his best time (10.50 at the Doha Worlds in 2019) but ahead of his straight from the Tokyo Olympics last summer (10.68).
The 30-year-old world record holder thus scored 947 points, taking provisional 6th place. Canadian Olympic champion Damian Warner took the lead, as expected, with 1,030 points (10 secs 27 over 100m).
