Even though the season ended for most of the Cuban basketball players who play in foreign leagues, there is still activity, in a week in which Cuba disastrously closed its participation in the World Cup window with defeats against Mexico and the United States.
Three days ago, point guard from Santiago Amaury Bueno made his debut in the Vietnam league with Cantho Catfish, a team led by star former Cuban player Leonardo “Maravilla” Pérez.
Cantho Catfish accumulates, up to now, a negative balance of two setbacks with a smile, although Bueno has established himself as one of the leaders of the group with his performances.
In the last presentation, those from the city of Cân Tho fell 84-72 against the Thang Long Warriors. The Cuban point guard left with 17 points, three rebounds and four assists.
This performance ratified the influence that Bueno is having in the operation of the squad. The international with the Antillean team averages 36 minutes, 13.7 cartons, three rebounds and 5.3 assists per game.
Cantho Catfish’s next challenge will be on July 10, when they take on the Saigon Heat.
In Cuba, one of lime and sand
The Cuban men’s basketball team left its worst face in recent World Cup windows, falling 75-66 and 64-87 against Mexico and the United States, respectively.
With the absences of Marcos Chacón, Yoanki Mencia, Pedro Bombino and Amaury Bueno, and the additions of Marlon Díaz, Marvin Cairo, César Villegas and Sergio Machado, the Cuban team was unable to follow a game scheme on the court and its technical deficiencies -tactics ended up taking their toll.
In addition, the athletes who had to carry the offensive weight of the basketball team did not show their best face and only the performance of Yoel Cubillas was saved, who showed that he has made good use of his foray into the El Salvador Major Basketball League.
Cubillas scored 11 points against Mexico and obtained the best score of the match with 20 credits, while against the North Americans he was the author of 15 cartons and nine rebounds that allowed him to be the most efficient player of the Antilleans on the court.
In this way, those led by Eduardo Moya left without knowing the victory, with six lines in the setbacks box.
The experienced coach declared in the press conference after the match with the United States that it is necessary to make changes and provide game for Cuban athletes from the lower categories to the highest level.
The next challenge for the men’s team will be when they seek to qualify for the Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador and the Olympics in Paris.
women’s basketball
On the other hand, this Thursday it transpired that the Cuban women’s team will compete in the Caribbean Championship to be held at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum from July 13 to 18.
With a young roster in which names such as Anisleydi Galindo (Reggias de Santiago/Mexico), Yamara Amargo (Reggias de Santiago/Mexico) and Isabela Jourdain (Portuguese Swimming Federation/Portugal) stand out, the Caribbean warriors will fight for one of the three quotas that are in dispute to be able to attend Centrobasket 2022.
So far, the participation of four teams is confined: the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti and the host, Cuba.
Best Single Performance: The best individual performance once again goes to Villa Clara center Yoel Cubillas, who stood out for Cuba in the window.
Pay attention to the data: Valencia Basket’s Havana power forward, Jasiel Rivero, finished among the leaders in rebounds in this phase towards the World Cup. Rivero accumulated 8.8 rebounds per game and was only surpassed by the Dominican Ángel Delgado (12.5) and the Colombian Andrés Felipe Ibargüen (9.0).
