The Baie-Comeau Blue Jays return from two separate tournaments held on July 8, 9 and 10, after delivering solid performances. One of the local teams reached the final in Saint-Honoré in Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean and the other took top honors in L’Ancienne-Lorette.
During the Saint-Honoré tournament, the Blue Jays U9A stood out with a series of victories. They first defeated the Lévis Ambassadors by a score of 13-5, then ended their day with another 12-1 victory over the Saint-Honoré Diamondbacks. The next day, they got the better of the Chicoutimi Phillies by a score of 14-3. The same evening, they eliminated the Voyageurs de Jonquière in the quarter-finals by winning 18-8.
The semi-final against the Haute-Saint-Charles Titans was exciting until the end. Indeed, trailing 11-5 early in the last inning, a 7-run push gave the Blue Jays the lead, who then sealed the game by striking out all three Titans batters in a row.
Baie-Comeau lost in the grand final against the Beauport Royals by a score of 15-9. However, this team made up of several new players defied predictions and shone during the tournament.
The U11Bs, meanwhile, crossed swords at L’Ancienne-Lorette. They won their first game 8-2 against the Capitales de Québec, and then scored two victories the next day, with a score of 7-0 against the Artilleurs de Lévis-Centre and 15-0 against the Braves de Haute-Saint- Charles.
Going directly to the semi-final, they gave no quarter to the Cavaliers, also from Haute-Saint-Charles, who lost 10-0.
The final match was tighter remaining equal 3-3 until the very end. But a run scored at the very end of the last inning allowed the Jays to win the tournament.
The president of the Baie-Comeau Minor Baseball Association, François Montigny, says he is very proud of these two teams which, he points out, brilliantly represent the city of Baie-Comeau on the outside. He would also see as a sign of support for this representativeness that Baie-Comeau go ahead in the matter of improving land with a natural surface.
Joined on this subject, the City of Baie-Comeau says it is ready to work with the Minor Baseball Association to update the 2020 project on the repair of the fields, and is ready to file a new request when a federal, provincial or other funding will be available.
