Basketball: UNLaM debuts in the Pre-Federal against Estudiantes Porteño

An old dream of basketball at the National University of La Matanza will be fulfilled this Sunday: a team made up of student-athletes from this House of Higher Studies will perform at the Pre-Federal tournament.

With Mariano Gerez as coach of the squad, made up mostly of the same players that make up the Superior team in the Metropolitan Federation contest, Verde will debut this Sunday against Estudiantes Porteño.

The members of the UNLaM are Mauro Frette, Ignacio Uton, Ezequiel Manzanares, Juan Cruz Martinez Sanz, Leandro Alvarez, Matthias Menendez (Senior); Joaquin Escubilla, Giuliano Michelangeli (from Platense), Thiago Maset (sub-22); Germán Carrizo, Gaston Arena (from Porteño), Gabriel Zubillaga, Ramiro Moreno, Leandro Sanchez (sub-20); and Emiliano Martin (under 19).

“We are preparing ourselves since the start date came out, very focused on the tournament. Beyond the reinforcements, the team has been playing since March, when we started the championship”, commented Gerez in dialogue with El1 Digital.

Regarding the objectives that the group set for itself, the coach said: “We set out, mainly, to participate in the tournament. It is the first time that UNLaM participates and we want to compete as equals with the teams that are currently above us. And as always, that one plays a sport and competes, we would like to give the surprise, since surely nobody takes us into account, and to be able to achieve a place for the Federal 2023”.

At the end of the talk, Gerez highlighted the virtues of the team he chose for the company. “We have a really incredible human group. Our greatest achievement is finding players who support each other and are always looking for ways to improve and grow. The boys train hard. And we are very happy with the group. We know that it is a very difficult tournament, but we also have, against it, an enormous illusion”, indicated Mariano.
