Brisbane plans to introduce self-piloted electric air taxis at the Olympics / Article

A memorandum of intent signed by the Southeast Queensland Council of Mayors and air transport mobility company Wisk will allow the project to be developed in line with the state’s local government, regional council mayor Greg Christensen explained. The collaboration will also avoid the problems caused by the unregulated introduction of electric scooters in Queensland in recent years.

Christensen emphasized that the changes in the transport system will expand mobility opportunities for citizens who have limited access to public transport.

“Obviously, we have to be 100 percent sure it’s going to be safe for the public, but it’s always exciting to see new technologies come to light,” Christensen said.

On the other hand, the marketing representative of “Wisk” Becky Tanner admitted that all the requirements of the law and the wishes of the local society will have to be covered in order for the implementation of the project to be successful, therefore it is premature to name the time of the first flights.

Wisk initially plans to introduce electric air taxis on certain routes, but later hopes to develop an on-demand service as well. Electric air taxis are designed for vertical take-off, while further they fly horizontally like airplanes. Thus, air transport will not require the construction of expensive runways, as flights will be able to be made from supermarket parking lots and building roofs.

The Olympic Games in Brisbane in 2032 are scheduled from July 23 to August 8.
