Six months after answering the greatest call a player can get, David Ortiz he remains amazed at his good fortune. The former slugger of Boston Red Sox — affectionately known as Big Papi — will be exalted to Hall of Fame on Sunday.
“I still can’t believe it. This has been a dream come true”, said the 46-year-old Dominican who accumulated 541 home runs in 20 seasons in the Major Leagues and it was key for the Red Sox to win three World Series championships.
“I had to grow up in very difficult situations. My childhood was not easy, but I had parents who guided me and they took care of me so that I would not get into trouble.”
Ortiz is just the 58th player to be selected by the Baseball Writers Association of America in your first year of eligibility. He enters as the designated hitter with more games played than any other member of the Cooperstown pantheon.
He will also be the fourth Dominican, joining John Marichal, Peter Martinez and Vladimir Guerrero. The Class of 2022 also includes six figures who were selected by committees from baseball eras.
