The Cáceres Down Syndrome Association has organized the first edition of its Inclusive Basketball Campus, which has had the participation of the Sacred Heart Club and the collaboration of the Cáceres Provincial Council.
The campus, held in Tierras de Granadilla, has brought together a group of 26 young people with and without disabilities, who lived together, went sightseeing and played basketball.
With this initiative, Down Cáceres tries to overcome the model that separates young people with and without disabilities. For this reason, the 26 participating boys lived the three days together, without any type of barrier or separation between them.
Another of the purposes of the campus was to use sport, and specifically basketball, as a vehicle for having fun, in addition to educating children with the values transmitted by team sports.
Down Cáceres seeks to comply with the Universal Convention for People with Disabilities, which prohibits segregation and is committed to inclusive leisure. During the three days that the campus lasted, the association had a group of coaches that had the presence of two members of the Down Cáceres staff.
The Extremadura Basketball Federation, the Ahigal City Council, Northgate, Extremadura Sport and the General Directorate of Sports of the Junta de Extremadura, which ceded the facilities of El Anillo, have collaborated in its development.
