After a long illness, Win Remmerswaal passed away on Sunday 24 July, the unforgettable pitcher starring in splendid seasons in Italy with the uniform first of Parma, then of Nettuno and finally of San Marino before returning to Holland. The news was given by the Parma Baseball website after the announcement of the president of Wassenaar, the first club in Remmerswaal, and his daughter Alessia. The funeral will take place on Friday 29 July.
Remmerswaal was born on March 8, 1954 in Den Haag and after the victory with the orange national team in the 1973 Europeans he signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox franchise. His debut as a pitcher in the Major League (first European) took place in 1979. In the two seasons played with the Red Sox he achieved a record of three wins and one defeat. His last major league appearance took place on October 5, 1980.
After the subsequent period with the Pawtucket Red Sox in Triple AAA, Remmerswaal moved to Italy to wear the Parma uniform, the company with which he won the Champions Cup in 1984 and the Scudetto in 1985. Subsequently Remmerswaal also wore the shirts of Neptune and San Marino.
In 1997 he fell into a coma after contracting double pneumonia.
In 2010 the Dutch TV West, a regional broadcaster based in The Hague, made and broadcast a documentary edited by Jan Hermsen lasting about 20 minutes and dedicated to Win Remmerswaal.
The President Luca Meli, the General Manager Massimo Fochi, the Sports Director Maurizio Renaud, the members of the Board of Directors, members, technicians, players and collaborators of Parma baseball cling to the family of Win Remmerswaal remembering the splendid moments of baseball he gave.
Win Remmerswaal will be remembered with a minute of silence on Wednesday night before the match between Parma Clima and Bologna.
