The Tour de France recently ended, on the eve of the Clásica de Donostia and the Vuelta a España is already on the horizon, the fifth stage of which will be about 70 kilometers long in Gipuzkoa, on Wednesday, August 24.

Specifically, the first ones, starting from Irun, where this Wednesday the Irun-Bilbao stage was presented, the first important one after the three initial ones in the Netherlands and the fourth, Gasteiz-Laguardia.

The Vuelta was supposed to start in the Netherlands in 2020 but could not do so due to the pandemic, so Irun was the starting point. So the fans could not fully enjoy the event, due to restrictions, and the organizers promised to return when it returned to normal.

The mayor of Irundarra, José Antonio Santano, stressed that «La Vuelta has fulfilled its commitment and on August 24 we will once again have the best cycling through the streets of our city. It is an event that puts us on the map and has a very positive impact on local sectors of activity.”

Borja Olazabal, Councilor for Sports, pointed out that “we are going to dress the city for the occasion and the previous weekend there will be various initiatives, such as an Igande Sasoi dedicated to cycling or the opportunity to take the route of the neutralized start”, which will be the following: Plaza del Ensanche, Iparralde avenue, Bidasoa street, Santiago street, Juncal street, San Marcial street, Mayor street with paving, Artaleku and Elizatxo avenue.

Present at the presentation was Fernando Escartín, technical director of the race, who recalled that «running in the Basque Country was always something very special and I still see it today. In this stage things will begin to be seen in the fight for the general, since the end is complicated, with two climbs to the Vivero.
