MLB: Jose Berrios strikes out 13 batters against Phillies

Jose Berrios struck out 13 batters and the Toronto Blue Jays started a home run on the right foot on Tuesday, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3.

Berrios (7-4) tied a career high in strikeouts. Working six innings, he gave up three runs and six hits. He did not allow a base on walks.

Berrios is 5-0 at Rogers Center in eight starts. “It’s a big win for us,” said Berrios. We had some troubles abroad, but the rest day (Monday) helped us to move on. »

Lourdes Gurriel had four hits, including an automatic double that broke the 3-3 deadlock in the sixth.

He pushed home Alejandro Kirk, author of a single, before the same kind of hit from Teoscar Hernandez. Doubles and singles were conceded by Jeurys Familia (1-1).

The Blue Jays snapped a four-game losing streak to kick off a six-game home stint. In Oakland and Seattle, the Blue Jays had lost six out of seven times lately.

Tim Mayza and Yimi Garcia will link up with Jordan Romano, who scored a 19th save (a high in the American, tied with Emmanuel Clase of the Guardians). Bryson Stott hit a solo home run for the Phillies, who have lost their last three games.

Center fielder George Springer made a brilliant catch at the warning lane in the fifth, at the expense of Kyle Schwarber.

“It gave us momentum,” manager Charlie Montoyo said. It was an important moment of the game. »

Kevin Gausman has pitched on the sidelines and could return against Kansas City Thursday through Sunday. On July 2, he was hit in the right ankle by an arrow.

Receiver Danny Jansen got a single when he returned to the game after five weeks out (a broken little finger in his left hand).

Rob Thomson of the Phillies became the first Canadian in major league baseball to serve as a manager in his own country.

A native of Sarnia, Ontario, he has led Philadelphia on an interim basis since Joe Girardi was fired on June 3. The club then had a 22-29 record.

The match drew 32,795 people. On Wednesday night, Zack Wheeler will face Ross Stripling. Wheeler shut out St. Louis seven innings in his last two starts.

Jansen back; Moreno surrendered in the AAA

The Toronto Blue Jays just removed receiver Danny Jansen’s name from the injured list 10 days before the game and traded rookie receiver Gabriel Moreno to the AAA level.

The 27-year-old Jansen had been sidelined with a broken finger since June 6. In 19 games before his injury, Jansen was batting .232 with 7 home runs and 13 RBIs.

Moreno made his major league debut on June 11 and batted .276 in 58 at-bats. He still hadn’t hit his first long on the Manfred circuit. At the time of his debut, Moreno was considered the Jays’ top prospect.

Toronto (45-42) is fourth in the American East Division. The Jays host the Phillies at Rogers Center on Tuesday night.
