Pascal Cheng’s bronze medal for Austria in men’s singles badminton

Excellent success for the Austrian sport of badminton! ÖBV Youth National Team Athlete Pascal Cheng (WAT Simmering) had to admit defeat to Danish Salomon Thomasen in two sets in the semi-finals – in the fight for the final ticket – but at the same time wins the bronze medal for the ÖOC team at the European Youth Olympic Festival 2022 in Banská Bystrica ( Slovakia) !

Before that, the 16-year-old Viennese was able to secure group victory in the preliminary round and in the knockout round that followed she defeated Britain’s Harper Leigh in three sets in the round of 16 and in the quarter-final against Noah Warning. (LUX) in two sets.

Also at the start of Austria was Anja Rumpold (BC Götzis). After respectable success against Germany’s Marie Stern in the women’s singles, she had to admit defeat in the remaining preliminary round pool games against opponents from Croatia, Great Britain and Ireland and placed third in her pool.

The Austrian badminton team will continue on Thursday, where the two ÖBV athletes will compete together in the mixed doubles competition. They start with an Albanian couple.

Here are some facts about the event:
This week the European Youth Olympic Festival 2022 will take place in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. 3,000 athletes from 48 nations compete in 10 sports. One of these sports is badminton, which is played in the U17 men’s singles, U17 women’s singles and U17 mixed doubles disciplines.

The Austrian Badminton Association nominated the two young national team athletes Anja Rumpold (BC Götzis) and Pascal Cheng (WAT Simmering) in the singles competitions and together in the mixed doubles. These athletes were officially sent to EYOF 2022 by the Austrian Olympic Committee. The players are looked after on site by the ÖBV youth national coach, Daniel Graßmück.
