LOS ANGELES — Food counter workers at Dodger Stadium have voted to strike ahead of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
Workers employed by Compass Group and its subsidiary Levy Restaurants voted 99% to authorize a strike.
This could start at any time, according to Unite Here Local 11.
The union is asking for what it calls “a new fair contract”.
Related events will begin on Saturday and culminate with the actual match on July 19.
Levy employs nearly 1,500 servers, bartenders, box attendants, cooks and dishwashers at the stadium, which will host the All-Star Game for the first time since 1980.
“They are the backbone of our tourism and sports industry, but many are struggling to make ends meet,” said union co-chair Susan Minato. No worker should have to continue to live like this.”
The union represents more than 32,000 hospitality workers in Southern California and Arizona.
The Major League Baseball Players Association said Monday it supports stadium workers.
“They deserve to be treated fairly and will continue to have our 1,200 members behind them,” an MLBPA statement read.
