The U17 National Team fought until the end but could not against New Zealand

Argentina fell on the closure against the ocean team and this Saturday will face the loser of Slovenia-Korea in the continuity of the U17 Women’s World Cup.

The U17 National Team could not round off a great match against New Zealand and fell 65-58 at the start of the Reclassification phase of the World Cup in the category that takes place in Debrecen, Hungary. The cast led by Laura González played a very good game, showing an evolution on both sides of the field and staying ahead on the scoreboard for much of the forty minutes, however their rival closed it better through their effectiveness and was left with the win. This Saturday, Argentina will go against the loser of the match between Slovenia and Korea, in the fight for positions 13 to 16.

The albiceleste selected had several aspects to highlight this Friday noon. Malena Maggi was the top scorer with 13 points, in addition to other outstanding roles such as Angelina Giacone (12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals), Paula López (11 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 recoveries), Juana Amaya ( 8 points, 6 boards and 6 assists) and Nerea Lagowski (6 points and 8 rebounds). There were fewer losses compared to previous commitments (15), although the story was complicated by losing effectiveness in shooting and a rebounding struggle in which New Zealand prevailed more and more.

The U17 had a good start, exploiting their good effectiveness in the three-point shot, with a 4/8 in triples during the first minutes to take off on the scoreboard. Maggi’s good hand marked a starting point, in a team that also struggled on par in rebounding, relying on the inside game of Giacone and Lagowski. Even so, the procedure was stick to stick and Argentina could not take off in the first chapters, closing the first 19-15 and leading 30-27 when entering the long break. Giacone and López took the offensive command in several passages of that first half.

Little by little everything began to change in the complement. New Zealand’s flurry of points became increasingly difficult to counter, and although the score remained tight, Argentina no longer had the same effectiveness as at the beginning and in the long run it cost much more. González’s men entered the last quarter 46-43 up, however the trident made up of Jones, Tamilo and Taulelei was the pillar of the Oceanic team, who had greater effectiveness in closing with two consecutive triples that were key to defining the match. Argentina tried to respond once again, but their rival was much more solid and won the match.

With this result, Argentina will continue its actions in this U17 World Cup from tomorrow, Saturday, with a rival and schedule yet to be defined. The opponent will be the loser of the game that will take place between Slovenia and South Korea, and the National Team will try to add its first victory in order to aspire to the best possible position in the tournament.
