US track and field athlete McLaughlin breaks the world record in the 400-meter hurdles / Article

McLaughlin, the champion of the Tokyo Olympics, triumphed in the final with a result of 50.68 seconds, breaking the previous world record she achieved a month ago by 0.73 seconds. The 22-year-old athlete broke the world record for the fourth time in the last 13 months.

Since June 2021, McLaughlin has reduced the world record from 52.16 seconds to 50.68 seconds. She also became the youngest athlete in women’s athletics who owns the three biggest achievements in the discipline – Olympic gold, world champion laurels and a world record.

Silver medalist Femke Bol of the Netherlands crossed the finish line 1.59 seconds after McLaughlin, while bronze medalist Dalila Muhamad was 2.45 seconds behind the champion and compatriot.

McLaughlin can still add to his gold stock in the 4×400 meter relay at the World Championships.

The world record earned McLaughlin a $100,000 cash prize from organizers in addition to a $70,000 win bonus.

On the other hand, Bahamian runner Shaunie Miller-Uibo won the women’s 400 meters, finishing in 49.11 seconds, which is the season’s best result in the world. Miller-Uibo is a two-time Olympic champion, but she won gold for the first time at the world championships.

The silver medal went to the Dominican Marylady Paulino, 0.49 seconds behind the winner, while the bronze was secured by the Barbadian sprinter Sada Williams, who was separated from the champion by 0.64 seconds. It has already been announced that Gunta Vaičule won the 25th place in the preliminaries at the distance of 400 meters.

American Michael Norman became the world champion for men in 400 meters for the first time with a result of 44.29 seconds. Grenada’s Kirani James was 0.19 seconds slower to take silver, while Great Britain’s Matthew Hudson-Smith of Norman was 0.37 seconds behind to take bronze.

It has already been announced that in the women’s javelin throw, Lina Muse won 6th place on Friday, while Australian Kelsey Lee-Barber won the second world championship in a row.

The world championships in Eugene will last until Sunday, with approximately 1,900 track and field athletes from 192 countries and territories participating.
