Nicholas Godsick dreams big. “Like every junior, I want to be number 1 and win Grand Slam titles,” the 17-year-old told the “Tages-Anzeiger”. Roger Federer’s manager Tony Godsick’s son is just gaining experience at Wimbledon. In singles and in doubles. Roger Federer (40) is personally present in London. The maestro watches the game against Belgian Gilles Arnaud Bailly (16) from the balcony.
“Roger was like a second father to me while I was growing up,” says number 28 in the junior world rankings about Federer. He has been connected to the world star from Basel since he was little. “My father started working with him when I wasn’t even one, our families are very close.” With his parents and sister, the American has accompanied Federer almost everywhere. “Where he was, we were too.”
Now Godsick sees Federer as his idol, his mentor, his friend. He is “simply an incredible person,” says the teenager. “Growing up, I admired everything he did. I saw him win, saw him lose, always saw how he behaved.”
And Godsick even trains with Roger. “I’m very lucky,” says the youngster. Since tennis means a lot to him, Federer has “helped him enormously. We’re super close and he’s always there for me when I need his advice.”
He’s still graduating from high school
Godsick was practically born playing tennis. His mom once won seven WTA tournaments and was once the fourth best player in the world. His dad is a co-founder of the Laver Cup.
In addition to tennis, the Ohio-based talent is currently graduating from high school through online courses. After that, Godsick will attend elite college in Stanford, California.
At Wimbledon he lost his match against Gilles Arnaud Bailly in straight sets. But he’s still there in doubles. There he won the game against Slovakian Peter Nad (18) and Poland Martyn Pawelski (17) alongside his partner Mika Brunold (17).
It’s just a small step on Godsick’s path, which he himself has taken much further: “I recently said to Roger: I want to break all your records. Even if it’s quite difficult.” He dreams big. (mum)
