In the last tournament game for Germany at the European Women’s Softball Championship 2022 in Catalonia, Spain, they scored a clear and never endangered 12-0 win against Poland. Five runs in the first, two in the second and five in the third inning laid the foundation for success. Even before the game it was already clear that the team of national coach Udo Dehmel would take eighth place in the final standings of the women’s softball championship. Germany finished the tournament with four wins and five losses.
Despite the clear result, it got emotional. Four well-deserved players ended their long careers in the women’s national softball team with the last European Championship game. Claudia Volkmann, Alexandra Stüwe, Milena Böttger and Lisa Sophie Delay were retired by their teammates and the coaching staff to applause from the numerous German fans in the 1992 Olympic Stadium in Barcelona.
In terms of sport, however, some players were able to set accents again. Katharina Szalay had three hits – including an inside the park home run – as well as three runs and two RBIs. Lara Brockmeyer contributed a triple and two RBI. Fiona Brosch and Claudia Volkmann also collected two RBI. Milena Böttger and Alexandra Stüwe each scored twice. In the pitcher circle, Claudia Volkmann was able to distinguish herself again with 3 1/3 strong innings, in which she only allowed four hits and one walk and recorded three strikeouts.
