Champions League draw: despite Tottenham, OM will have a chance

Marseille can breathe. Because the further the draw for the Champions League group stage progressed on Thursday, the greater his chances of falling into “a group of death”. But OM avoided the worst (group C with Bayern Munich, Barça and Inter) to finally inherit group D: Eintracht Frankfurt, Tottenham and Sporting Club Portugal.

A draw that seems affordable for the club vice-champion of France. But that’s on paper. Marseille will play against the winner of the Europa League (Frankfurt), against the fourth in the Premier League (Tottenham) and the vice-champion of Portugal (Sporting). Nothing will be simple but the opening exists for OM, which aims to find the round of 16 of the C1 for the first time since the 2011-2012 season.

Marseille are entering the 30th anniversary season of their victory in the Champions League, still the only success for a French club. But the Phocaeans remain on several disappointing campaigns in this competition: they have won only one match in the last fifteen disputed. The favorite of this group is called Tottenham. Trained by the Italian Antonio Conte, the London club can count on its doublet of attackers Harry Kane – Heung-min Son.

Eintracht Frankfurt won the C3 last season but the team of former PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp is having a difficult start to the season after a home defeat (6-1) against Bayern Munich or in the Super Cup. Europe against Real Madrid (2-0). It is the only team in the group that OM have already faced in Europe: it was during the 2018-2019 season and the Germans had won twice.
