Serena Williams recently had in fashion magazine Vogue announced her resignation. The 23-time Grand Slam tournament winner should have her last appearance at the US Open, which begins on Monday. In singles, the 40-year-old meets Danka Kovinic from Montenegro in the first round on Tuesday night (1:00 a.m. CEST).

Germany’s women’s tennis boss Barbara Rittner wishes Williams an honorable farewell. “You wish her not to get a pack, as was the case last time,” said Rittner German press agency: “In the end it wouldn’t matter, it wouldn’t detract from her great career. We owe her an incredible amount.” Williams is “a great player who has done a lot for women’s tennis and for women’s sport itself”.
