The 40-year-old American won the tournament in Toronto on Monday 6: 3, 6: 4 against Nuria Parrizas Diaz from Spain and thus qualified for the second round. The success was only certain after around two hours of play, their victorious game to the 4:4 equalizer in the second set lasted 25 minutes alone.

“It’s great to be back here in Toronto. I didn’t know if I would be able to play here,” said the longtime world number one right after the match. After her first win in 14 months, Serena Williams was only relieved – and finally a little more optimistic. “I think there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. And I’m getting closer to that light. I can’t wait to go through it.”

Venus fails at Teichmann

The winner of 23 Grand Slam tournaments lost to French Harmony Tan in the first round of the grass classic in Wimbledon in mid-July after a year-long injury break. After that, she initially left open whether she would continue her career.

The next opponent of Serena Williams at the US Open preparatory tournament is the Swiss Olympic champion Belinda Bencic or Tereza Martincova from the Czech Republic.

Serena’s older sister Venus, however, lost her game against the Swiss Jil Belen Teichmann with 2: 6 and 3: 6.
