Defensive end Trey Flowers has agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Released by the Detroit Lions in March, Flowers finally found common ground in Miami.
In 2019, the Lions made him the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. The two-time Super Bowl champion signed a five-year contract valued at $90 million, including a guaranteed sum of $56 million. However, Flowers has not been able to stay healthy for the past two years.
The 29-year-old was placed on injured reserve for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The defensive end has had just 3.5 quarterback sacks in the past two years, a sharp drop from his first season with the Lions during which he had 7 sacks in 15 games.
Flowers is familiar with the defensive scheme employed by Dolphins defensive coordinator Josh Boyer. He was called upon to play with such patterns in his early years with the Lions and also in his four seasons as a member of the New England Patriots. Boyer is a former Patriots defensive assistant.
Flowers had 21 sacks in his four seasons with New England in addition to 5.5 sacks in nine playoff games. He has also won two Super Bowl rings with the franchise.
