Sarah Iliev logically won the title of French champion for 15/16 year olds on Tuesday. Logically, but not easily: after a smooth first set against the -4/6 from Ile-de-France Delia Gaillard, the -15 from Ostwald had more difficulty in the second set, concluded in the tie-break 6-2, 7-6 (7 /4).
“This title was really close to my heart”
“It’s a title that I really wanted to win,” explained the Alsatian who has always been one of the best young players in her category in France, but without winning a national title so far. “I suspected that it would be more complicated than in previous matches, because Delia is a good player and we had to deal with the fatigue accumulated during the previous days. I tried to be aggressive throughout the match, but it was harder physically in 2e set where I had a little slack. I’m happy, because this title was really close to my heart. I will now go to the United States to play the US Open juniors. »
The title of Sarah Iliev, 15, is the second for an Alsatian player during these 2022 championships, after that of Betty Michel (5/6, TC Illberg) in ladies over 60. Marc Steger, also from TCI, lost in the final for the +40s in July.
Clément Bergantz stalls in the doubles final
Alsace still had the possibility of winning a new trophy on Tuesday, in the final of the 15/16 year old boys’ doubles. But Clément Bergantz (0, Ill TC Strasbourg), associated with Francilien Ethan Khun (0), lost 7-5, 6-3 against two other 0s, Maé Malige (Auvergne Rhône-Alpes) and Lucas Marionneau (0, Loire Country). The latter had previously won the singles title in the category.
